The Runic Series: Thurisaz, Thorn, Thurs

June 24, 2014

We hope that wherever you are you have had a good Midsummer, and that things have been well with each one of you. Remember that our quarterly Midsummer Newsletter edition is going to be coming out on June 30 and is separate from the weekly version that comes out every Tuesday. If you are subscribed to our newsletter you automatically get the quarterlies as well!

On the broadcast for this week we discussed the 3rd Rune that is found in all of the runic systems. Thurisaz, Thorn, Thurs, depending on which system you are looking at.

This is an often misunderstood Rune as there are many in more modern times that try to make this into a positive stave. Depending upon the dignification of other runes around it if you are using this in a Bindrune, you can wrest a protective power from it but for the most part as stated in the Rune poems, it is a stave that has much negative potentiality. This does not mean it is “evil”, but in the Icelandic Rune poem it is related directly to a giant of demonic proportions whose chief delight is to torture women. The kind of pain agony, and suffering that a woman goes through in the throes of giving birth is the kind of suffering and pain that this evil giant likes to cause. As such this Rune is often used in esoteric practice for revenge and defense. This Rune would be one of those staves that in the lore you could call a mirk stave. Thurisaz is not a Rune that I would recommend a beginner to start working with, as the type of energy this Rune represents if the individual involved had any talent could wreak havoc as told by Egil Skalligrimsson. Sometimes it’s good to let sleeping dogs lie until you know how to bring them to heel.

Until next time...
